The Bad Seed is a great book for discussing the choices that we make during the day. This is an important social emotional skill for students to learn. Book Review
The Bad Seed is a tale of a sunflower seed that is “very baaadd” according to himself and others. His actions aren’t terrible, but they are quite rude. As the book goes on, we find out that he wasn’t always bad and we learn his heartbreaking story.
He had a loving family in his sunflower, but then he was put into a bag and almost eaten! This awful event led him to becoming “bad” by isolating himself and pushing others away.
But then he decides to make a change. He chooses to be happy to make better choices. And, while he doesn’t always get it right, he is trying to be a “good” seed!
The Bad Seed Book Activities
The Bad Seed lends itself to being a powerful book about making positive changes. That even if we have a bad day or week, we can always pick ourselves back up!
As you read the book aloud, it’s a good idea to stop and talk about the story with your students. This will give them time to think about what is happening and how they can apply it to their own lives. I like to print the discussion questions out on sticky notes and put them right in my book!
Students can even create their own Bad Seed craftivity! They will design a seed and on the inside, they’ll share their own ideas on how to have a good day. This makes a great bulletin board display with an important reminder for kids!
After reading The Bad Seed aloud, students can use task cards to think about the story and the SEL skill that goes along with it. These task cards can be used for discussion in small groups or partners. They can also be used individually for students to respond to on their own.
