I was chatting with my Facebook Group and I was curious which Take Home Book Bags they would be interested in seeing next. The response was overwhelming – STEAM! They were looking for a way to incorporate a STEM challenge into the book bags that their students were bringing home to share with their families. {Learn more about Take Home Book Bags here}
What is in a STEAM Book Bag?
Each STEAM bag is centered around a common theme (airplanes, dance, etc). In each bag is a list of sample books that relate to that theme. There are writing prompts and journal page templates. There is a full sheet that outlines the STEAM challenge – complete with a materials list, guiding questions and science, technology, engineering, art and math connections. In each bag there is a list of activities that families can explore together that connect to the bag’s overall topic. Finally, there are reflection forms for students to use.
Why STEAM Book Bags?
In addition to promoting literacy, these bags bring problem solving home. They are simple and engaging, yet they build a love for learning and a solid base for understanding key concepts later on. The STEAM challenges encourage experimenting, tinkering, building, observing, exploring, and creating. They offer an opportunity for kids to push the limits of what they can do. The reading component pulls in students who normally shy away from STEM in the classroom. It’s an exciting and educational activity that students are eager to share with their families.
How is a STEAM Book Bag different than the original bags?
The STEAM bags are very similar to the original Take Home Book Bags so they can be used interchangeably in your classroom. The main difference is that the STEAM challenge takes the place of the game or craft. I have tried to choose different topics for these bags so that they can be mixed with the originals.
What supplies are required?
Each bag includes a list of materials that are needed for the STEM challenge. I have created challenges that require very few materials. I also tried to utilize items that can be easily found around the house or purchased cheaply.
Are students required to complete the STEM challenge?
As with the original book bags, I don’t make any part of the bags mandatory (except for the reading!). Each part is voluntary as my main goal is just to provide books for my students and pique their interest in reading. I know that once students see the challenges, they will be so intrigued that they will be eager to try them out!
