Our February new books post was so popular, that I wanted to bring you more! I know how hard it is, as a teacher, to stay up to date on brand new books. There are so many amazing ones coming out each week! To help you out, I’ve pulled together some amazing 2022 new books for the month of March.

2022 New Books
Sing, Aretha, Sing by Hanif Abdurraqib
Sing, Aretha, Sing is a striking picture book biography. It shares how Aretha didn’t just sing, but sparked a movement as well. She was a performer and a Civil Rights activist who used her voice to uplift the Black community. Her popular song, “Respect,” is an anthem of identity, survival and joy.
Aretha’s music gave hope to people trying to make a change. Sing, Aretha, Sing demonstrates how one brave voice gave new power to a nation. This book will empower young readers to speak their own truth.
Just Help! How to Build a Better World by Sonia Sotomayor
Just Help! is a meaningful story on how to make the world and your community a better place. How it takes just one small action at a time to make a difference. The question “Who will you help today?” is central to this book and prompts readers to take action.
Just Help! takes readers on a journey through a neighborhood where kids, adults and everyone in between is helping each other. A great book to encourage students to do small acts of kindness.
I am Golden by Eva Chen
I am Golden emphasizes that who you are and where you come from is not just to be tolerated but celebrated and showcased. It is a manifesto of self-love for Asian-American children. This book will help spark acceptance. The joyfulness simply leaps of the pages of this beautifully illustrated book!
Mardi Gras Almost Didn’t Come This Year by Kathy Z. Price
Mardi Gras Almost Didn’t Come This Year is a gorgeous, lyrical picture book. It shares how a family finds home and healing in celebration after Hurricane Katrina. This vibrant and moving story shows a family struggling to rebuild both their home and spirit.
The mixed media illustrations immerse the reader in this family’s world. This Mardi Gras book also provides back matter with an author’s note about both the celebration and the hurricane.
Powwow Day by Traci Sorrell
In Powwow Day, 8 year-old River is recovering from illness. She is devastated that she can’t dance at the Powwow and wonders if she will ever dance again. We follow her journey from being isolated in illness to the healing power of her community.
Powwow Day also provides additional information on the history and functions of powwows. An excellent book for students to learn more about someone else’s cultural practices.
