Students are under so much pressure today. While parents mean well, students often feel they have no room for mistakes. This leads to feeling like they are not good enough no matter how hard they try. Teachers know the importance of implementing Social Emotional Learning into academics to counteract these feelings. Thankfully, building confidence with Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon will be a unit students never forget.
Between the book and the Read Aloud Activities, students will see nothing feels better than believing in themselves!
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon
Author Patty Lovell and illustrator David Catrow show students the importance of being confident and proud no matter what.
Molly Lou Melon is proud of who she is- quirks and all. She is short and clumsy. She has buck teeth and an interesting voice. However, her grandmother has always told her to walk proud, smile big, and sing for everyone to hear. Thankfully, Molly always follows this advice.
One day everything changes. Molly Lou starts at a new school, and a bully picks on her right away. While Molly could feel sad and discouraged, she remembers her grandmother’s words. So, Molly Lou shows off her confidence and reminds everyone to be proud of who they are.
Read Aloud Activities
Teachers know how important it is for students to be confident. Otherwise, they will have a negative mindset and not see how capable they are of showing growth. Luckily, building confidence with Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon will be a fantastic way to incorporate this skill into academics.
Since teachers have so much to prepare as it is, there is a teacher guide to outline the entire unit. Specifically, this contains all of the lesson plans needed. Additionally, it includes an introduction to help prepare students and sets the purpose for the story. Likewise, it contains essential vocabulary words.
Students greatly benefit from conversations with others. For instance, they can share a situation where they needed to be confident. Therefore, there are higher-level thinking questions and talking points to guide student discussion. Each question includes a page number, so teachers know exactly where to stop.
While discussion is essential to include in lessons, personal reflection is also critical. Thankfully, building confidence with Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon has both aspects! There is a written response and activity sheet to help students make personal connections on this Social Emotional skill. Since this skill is so important, there are multiple differentiated options.
Furthermore, there is hands-on craftivity! Students will love how the craft connects the story to their lives.
Application
Teachers work hard to ensure students understand how the material taught in the class relates to life outside the school. Therefore, there are task cards that provide scenarios or thought-provoking questions. Each task card will help students understand the importance of building confidence.
There are different ways to use the task cards. Honestly, they work great for whole class or small group discussions. They even work perfectly for individual work time. No matter how students complete the task cards, they will appreciate learning about building confidence with Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon.
No Prep Resource
Teachers have to handle so much. Thankfully, the Read Aloud Activities are all no prep! Teachers just need to print the resources. Best of all, all questions and prompts have page numbers to help teachers know exactly when to pause.
Teachers work so hard to show students how capable they are. However, students must believe this themselves. Otherwise, they will not have the needed confidence to achieve all of their dreams and goals. Thankfully, building confidence with Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon will be an inspirational unit for students!
