Our classrooms are made up of such wonderful, diverse groups of children each year. This makes it so important to celebrate diversity with your students. Here is a list of a few of my favorite books about diversity to share with your class!

Chocolate Milk, Por Favor by Maria Dismondy
Gabe is new to school and he doesn’t speak any English. Johnny immediately starts to tease him, calling out his differences. The rest of the class, however, is nice to Gabe. An important lesson on empathy, kindness and diversity.
Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard
A beautiful ode to not only fry bread, but to Native American culture and the importance of traditional foods. Includes back matter that provides perspective and historical context for the story.
Drawn Together by Minh Le
When a young boy visits his grandfather, their lack of a common language leads to confusion, frustration and silence. But as they sit down to draw together, something magical happens. They learn to communicate and appreciate each other, despite their differences.
The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson
A wonderful book for the beginning of the year or any time you need kids to be reminded of the message of being welcoming to others. The story shows how we are often more alike than different. That we need to have pride in who we are and to find our place in the community.

This simple, rhyming picture book illustrates our differences and our similarities. With a variety of cultures, abilities and lifestyles represented, this book emphasizes the acceptance and celebration of all in a school community.
