March can be a long and dreary month, but there are a lot of fun, unique holidays! Here are my favorite read aloud books for March to go along with each of these funky days of celebration.

Read Aloud Books for March
March 1st – National Pig Day
What better way to celebrate pigs than with a little Mercy Watson?? She is definitely one of my favorite pigs! Depending on how much time you have, you could read the picture book, A Piglet Named Mercy. Or you could pick up one of the shorter chapter books in the Mercy Watson series. Your students are sure to love all of them!
Another favorite pig of mine is Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web. Before you read this one aloud, grab the discussion questions to go along with it!
March 2nd – Read Across America
Read Across America is a wonderful time to celebrate the diversity of our country through picture books! Check out my Read Across America video or the blog post for some great activities and books to read with your students.
March 5th – Unplugged Day
Being plugged in is a normal way of life these days, especially as we are keeping our distance from one another. But we need to remind our students (and ourselves!) that it is important to unplug too.
The Couch Potato is a great book to share with students about how the outside world is a wonderful place to be!
March 8th – International Women’s Day
A is for Awesome is a great read-aloud for young students on International Women’s Day. There is one powerful female for each letter of the alphabet.
Shaking Things Up is a collection of poems about 14 different amazing women who have made a difference in our world. A great book to share with students!
March 9th – National Meatball Day
This holiday means I get to share one of my all time favorite books – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! Have a fun discussion with your students about whether they would want to live in the town of Chewandswallow. What type of food would they want to fall from the sky?
March 16th – National Panda Day
One of my favorite pandas is Chu! He has a series of books, but I love Chu’s First Day of School. He is nervous about starting school and meeting new friends. His teacher asks them to share something about themselves and Chu reveals his special talent!
March 20th – National Quilting Day
Quilts are not as prominent in homes as they once were, so this is the perfect day to share their importance with your class! Both The Keeping Quilt and The Quilt Story exemplify the power of family and memories shared within this piece of cloth.
March 27th – National Scribble Day
What a fun holiday! For National Scribble Day you could read Never Let a Unicorn Scribble. A young girl wants to teach her unicorn how to draw with crayons, but he can’t quite figure it out. A great story about perseverance and creativity!
March 30th – National Pencil Day
When Pencil Met the Markers would make a great read-aloud for March 30th!
March 31st – National Crayon Day
The Day the Crayons Quit is such a fun book – all about crayons! The crayons in Duncan’s crayon box want him to know how they feel about his coloring skills. They each write him a letter and they will have your students laughing!
