Election Day is coming up! What a perfect time to start discussing this important event with your students. This can be a tricky topic to address, though, especially in the younger grades. Picture books are the answer! Using books about elections and voting can make the concept much easier for your kids to grasp.

Books about Elections and Voting for Kids
Grace for President ~ by Kelly DiPucchio
Grace is shocked to find out that there has never been a female president! Her school hosts an election and she decides that she is going to run. The story takes you through the electoral process in a way that is easy for students to understand.
If I Ran for President ~ by Katherine Stier
What does it take to run for president? These young kids are going through the process to show you that it requires a lot of hard work and determination!
Vote! ~ by Eileen Christelow
This book has everything you need to know about voting and how our democracy works! It includes a lot of important vocabulary terms that are broken down to make them easy for students to understand.
My Teacher for President ~ by Kay Winters
Teachers and presidents have very similar jobs! This student thinks that their teacher should run for president because she has all the right qualifications to lead a country. A fun book that discusses the different jobs that the president does.
Duck for President ~ by Doreen Cronin
Duck wants to be in charge of the farm! The animals hold an election and he wins (much to Farmer Brown’s dismay). Duck then decides that running a farm is too much work, so he runs for governor and even president! A silly book with some information on elections and voting.
Interactive Read Alouds
Take each of these books a step further by turning them into interactive read alouds! This will allow students the opportunity to discuss the ideas in the story and build their vocabulary around the concept.
For each interactive read aloud, I print the discussion questions on sticky notes and place them right in the book. That way, I don’t have to remember all the questions, since they are right there for me!
Having the talking points and lesson plan all laid out for me makes it easy to just pick up the book and read! I also use written responses and activity sheets to extend the lesson and make sure that students really grasp the social studies concept that we are exploring.
