One thing that students often struggle with is how to see things from a different perspective. Using read aloud stories, we can help them understand that there is more than one way to see things. Here is a list of books about perspective taking to use in the classroom.

The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown

What makes something important? The author takes ordinary, everyday objects and illustrates why they are important. A great way to take a step back and look at the mundane through a different lens!

The Wall in the Middle of the Book by Jon Agee

Sometimes, what we can’t see, can cause more fear than necessary. An interesting story that opens students’ eyes to a different perspective.

Hey, Little Ant by Phillip M. Hoose

This book is told from the perspective of a young boy, who is about to step on an ant, and the perspective of the ant. Each shares how they feel about the situation. Quite an interesting ending!

I’m New Here by Anne Sibley O’Brien

A wonderful book to build community and grow empathy. It tells the story of three different students who have comes to an American school from another country. It will help students to understand how others feel.

Alfie: The Turtle that Disappeared by Thyra Heder

One of my favorite books! This story is told first from the perspective of a young girl, but then switches to that of her pet turtle. A great look at how we often only understand what we see and think, but there might be two sides to the story.
