Celebrate Constitution Day

Every year on September 17th, we celebrate Constitution Day. It commemorates the creation and signing of the the U.S. Constitution. According to the U.S. Department of Education:

each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students.

We know how important it is to create lessons that are relevant and meaningful. And then fit it into our busy day? Definitely a challenge! So, an interactive read-aloud is the perfect solution!

Constitution Day Read-Aloud

The picture book, A More Perfect Union: The Story of Our Constitution, explains how the important document was created. It makes the difficult concept more accessible to all students. A book is a great way to celebrate Constitution Day!

To ensure that students truly understand the story, turn it into an interactive read-aloud. You will be able to stop and discuss the important vocabulary words, as well as the concepts that are introduced in this book.

Interactive Read-Aloud

Before reading the book to your students, it’s important to go through and identify stopping points. Which words are hard to understand? What concepts might confuse students?

To save you time, I’ve already created an interactive read-aloud for this book. It includes an essential question, the social studies concept addressed, as well as the Common Core Standards that the lesson covers.

After that, the lesson plan includes talking points for activating background knowledge and setting the purpose of the read-aloud. In addition, it lists the vocabulary words from the book and extension activities to bring the book to life.

Next, I’ve created stopping points for you. Each one is a question for students to discuss or a vocabulary word to define. These stopping points can be printed on one sheet or on post-it notes. By printing on post-it notes, you can stick them right in your book!
