Fall is my favorite season! And there are so many books to celebrate the cooler weather. I pulled together some great books that are about more than just the changing of the season. Here are my favorite fall read aloud books.

Fall Read Aloud Books
The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry
Scarecrow is very lonely. Everyone is afraid of him, so they keep their distance. Then one day a baby crow falls out of a tree. And Scarecrow does something unexpected. He reaches out to help this baby crow and they become quick friends. The beautiful illustrations and rhyming text share the joy of helping. The Scarecrow is a great story of an unlikely friendship!
Sweep by Louise Greig
Ed is having a bad day and so he stars to make some not great choices. He starts sweeping the leaves and everything in his path – dogs, bikes, and even cars! Ed ends up with a pile as big as the buildings around him. He now needs to figure out how to fix his bad mood and this huge pile of leaves.
Sweep is a great book for teaching symbolism! Students will learn that because of the character’s actions, his problem gets out of control. We have all experienced bad moods and how our choices can make things better or worse.
Yellow Time by Lauren Stringer
Yellow Time is a joyful ode to that magical time when leaves change color and animals start to prepare for winter. It truly celebrates the coming of autumn. Yellow Time is not only lyrical, but can easily be connected to science concepts.
The Very Last Leaf by Stef Wade
In The Very Last Leaf, a young leaf knows everything there is to know about being a leaf. He knows about budding and wind resistance. But then it is time for the final test – leaping off the tree to the ground. This brave leaf doesn’t know if he can do it. He starts to make excuses and let’s all his classmates go ahead of him. With the encouragement of his teacher and help of his friends, he finally makes his fall.
Hello, Harvest Moon by Ralph Fletcher
Hello, Harvest Moon is a beautiful story that describes the world outside and in during a harvest moon. The amazing descriptive text is perfect for teaching imagery. It really paints an image in the reader’s mind by using senses to describe the surroundings.
Full of Fall by April Pulley Sayre
Discover the magic and science behind the changes of leaves in Full of Fall. This book explores the transformation trees undergo in fall. It takes readers through the process, from changing colors to falling off the tree and eventually crumbling as winter approaches. Full of Fall also includes extensive back matter. The stunning photos, poetic words and content vocabulary make it a great non-fiction book for the season of fall.
This is How I Know by Brittany Luby
This is How I Know is written by an Indigenous author and illustrator and discusses the changing of all seasons (not just fall). A child and her grandmother explore their surroundings, taking pleasure in the sights of new seasons. They are observing and living in relationship with the natural world around them. A great mentor text for imagery!
