It’s important that we share books with our students that represent a wide range of family structures. We want them to be able to see their own families reflected in books! Here are some Father’s Day picture books that celebrate Dads of all kinds!

Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry

I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott
I Talk Like a River is a powerful and poetic story about a young boy who stutters. He feels isolated, alone and struggles with communicating the way he’d like. His father takes him for a walk by the river to help him find his voice. The love and the encouragement from his father to persevere, help the boy become confident and accept himself.
She’s My Dad by Sarah Savage
When Mini’s cousin accidentally misgenders her dad Haley, Mini explains why misgendering is hurtful and why we need to treat trans people with respect. Mini speaks with confidence about transitioning and gender identity, and helps educate and empower others with trans relatives or friends.
She’s My Dad! passes on an important message about acceptance and respect. It also covers pronouns, dysphoria, family diversity and misgendering.
Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting
In Fly Away Home, we get an honest view of a hard-working father and his son, trying to create a better life for themselves. A homeless boy lives in an airport with his father, moving from terminal to terminal trying not to be noticed. He leaves us with the hope that someday he, like a trapped bird in the window, can flee his current living situation and return home.
Tell Me a Tattoo Story by Alison McGhee
In Tell Me a Tattoo Story, a father tells his son the story behind each of his tattoos. Together they go on a beautiful journey through family history. There’s a tattoo from a favorite book his mother used to read him, one from something his father used to tell him, and one from the longest trip he ever took. And there is a little heart with numbers inside—which might be the best tattoo of them all.
