July Read Aloud Books
Fourth of July – July 4th
Blue Sky, White Stars is a beautifully illustrated picture book that pays tribute to the American Flag. It’s simple, but powerful text, is a play on words. The book provides a wonderful, hopeful reminder for our country. Blue Sky, White Stars highlights various features of the flag in a unique way. It sheds light on the meaning of patriotic phrases.
National Video Game Day – July 8th
For National Video Game Day, we are going to flip the switch! I chose The Couch Potato, which points out the negative affects of staring at a screen. In The Couch Potato, the main character (a potato) stays inside all day, glued to his various screens. When a power surge strikes, he realizes that there is more to life. He understands you need to get outside and experience life and the beauty of nature.
An important message, especially during those lazy summer months!
National Kitten Day – July 10th
For the Love of Autumn is a beautiful story of a special kitten. Miss Parks moves to a new town and gets a job as a teacher. Her kitten, Autumn is by her side the whole way. One day, there is a thunderstorm and Autumn is lost. Miss Parks’ students help her search for her beloved cat. An endearing story!
Cow Appreciation Day – July 13th
Any cow lover would appreciate Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type! A simple, but silly book that all your students will love. Farmer Brown has a problem – his cows like to type ALL DAY LONG. And then they start leaving him notes. How will he get them to stop typing??
National Ice Cream Day – July 18th
I couldn’t pick just one book for National Ice Cream Day! So I chose three instead:
- Groovy Joe: Ice Cream & Dinosaurs – a fun story about ice cream and friends!
- Should I Share My Ice Cream? – an Elephant and Piggie book about how hard it can be to share something that you want to keep all for yourself!
- Ice Cream: The Full Scoop – a nonfiction book all about the history of ice cream and how it is made!
National Cousins Day – July 24th
The Relatives Came is the perfect summer book to celebrate cousins and extended family. Readers will be able to connect with the excitement of waiting for family to arrive, the fun you have while they are there and the sadness you feel when they leave. It’s an extra special one this year, as many of us are starting to see our extended families again after such a long time away!
Harry Potter’s Day – July 31st
Harry Potter’s birthday is on July 31st! To celebrate, grab your favorite novel from the series. I also enjoy sharing the illustrated versions with kids too. Both Harry Potter books make great read alouds for the classroom!
