All my life, I have grown up with family members with severe food allergies. Thankfully, I am not one of them, but I know what a struggle it can be for someone to constantly worry about what they are eating. It can be a huge challenge (and fear) for them.
One of the most difficult situations for a person with food allergies is going out to eat at a restaurant. Even though my mom goes out of her way to explain to the waiter what her restrictions are, there is still a risk of miscommunication or a mix-up in the kitchen.
To help alleviate some of this worry (and to cut down on trips to the hospital – yes, there have been many scary ones), I created Allergy Alert cards for her.
I printed out a whole stack for my mom and she carries them around in her purse. Anytime she visits a restaurant, she can not only explain her allergy concerns, but hand the card to the waiter as well. This way, he has the information in front of him AND he can hand it to the chef in the kitchen.
Since she has started carrying the cards around, there have been multiple times when a restaurant manager has approached our table and thanked her for the cards. He tells her what a help they are for his staff in ensuring that she has a pleasant and safe dining experience.
“We wish everyone carried these!” is often a comment we hear from them. So, I thought, why doesn’t everyone with allergies have one? I’m offering this set for free because I want not only adults, but children to be able to feel safe when they go somewhere to eat. You can grab them here for free.
The Allergy Alert cards can also be a major help in a school environment. Nurses can hand them out to teachers if they have a student in their class with allergies. The cards can be left for substitute teachers or taken on a field trip. Parents can fill them out on Meet the Teacher night, helping them feel relief that their child is in a safe environment.
Please feel free to grab them here if you, or someone you know, could benefit from them!
