Making a Reading Plan for Break

Create a reading plan for break with your students! This will help them not only read over vacations, but become life-long readers as well!

I previously wrote about helping students to read at home. But…what happens during a school vacation? They just don’t have that stability and schedule. Making a reading plan for break will help students be successful!

Create a Reading Plan for Break

Start by setting a goal with your students. What do they want to read? How much do they want to read?

Then discuss with them what might get in the way of this goal. What obstacles might they face? Oftentimes there are a lot more distractions at home! They might forget or there is no quiet space or they might not have access to books. Helping students identify these obstacles will make it easier to overcome them.

Then, have students think about what they are going to read over break. Do they have these books already? Do they need to check them out of the class or school library?

Have students create a reading plan for themselves. They can then take this plan home over vacation as a reminder to read every day! By putting a plan in place ahead of time will (hopefully) make them more successful.

After returning from vacation, keep the momentum going by reflecting on the reading that they did (or didn’t do!). Meet individually with your students to discuss how their reading plan went.

Were they able to be successful with their reading? What got in the way? What helped them to read more? Also have students think about what they could do differently before the next break.

By going through these steps with students, we can help students become successful readers outside of school.
