Each year, so many amazing new books are released! And it can be hard to keep up with them all. I thought I would start a new series on the blog (and on YouTube). I’ll bring you some of my favorite newly released books each month! Here are the new books for February 2022.

The Year We Learned to Fly by Jacqueline Woodson
Jacqueline Woodson is an all-time favorite author of mine! The Year We Learned to Fly is the book companion to The Day You Begin. It illuminates the power in each of us to face challenges with confidence.
In the story, a grandmother has an important lesson for her grandkids. She teaches her them to use their imaginations to lift themselves out of boredom. She explains how this skill was used by their ancestors. That they were able to show the world their strength and the resilience of their beautiful minds. The Year We Learned to Fly is a powerful, affirming and empowering story!
Who are Your People? by Bakari Sellers
Who are Your People is a tribute to the family and community who make us who we are. This book supports African-American pride and poses the question, ”what will you dream and how will you change the world?”
The illustrations in this book are geared towards younger kids, but share important scenes in history. The Underground Railroad and the Civil Rights Movement are some of the powerful scenes in this story. Who are Your People is a great conversation starter for your classroom!
Stacey’s Extraordinary Words by Stacey Abrams
Stacey’s Extraordinary Words is an inspiring tale of determination! This story is based on the author’s own childhood. Stacey loves words more than anything! She loves sounding them out, reading them and finds comfort in her favorite words.
When Stacey is chosen for the school spelling bee, however, she’s not as excited as she thought she would be. What if she messes up? What if she can’t speak up? Stacey ultimately learns that words are powerful and that maybe perseverance is the most important word of all!
Marley and the Family Band by Cedella Marley
Marley and the Family Band celebrates music, love and family. This poetic story is about a young girl who moves to a new country and must learn how to make new friends. So, she comes up with a plan to to hold an outdoor concert in her neighborhood. When the weather ruins her plans, she learns just how kind her new neighbors are!
This joyful, vibrant book is inspired by the author’s own childhood and her iconic father. Cedella learns that nothing can stop the music, as long as you have community.
I Love You Because I Love You by Muon Thi Van
A diverse scene of characters make up I Love You Because I Love You. A story that celebrates all the reasons why we love our people. It answers two important questions. What are all the big and small reasons why we love the people we do? And what does it look like when we voice it out loud?
Showing love doesn’t have to be complicated or follow an exact set of rules. The simplest of day to day acts can show those around us that we care. A great conversation starter for the classroom!
Eyes that Speak to the Stars by Joanna Ho
In this follow-up to Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, Joanna Ho brings us Eyes that Speak to the Stars. This story is about a young Asian boy who realizes that his eyes are different than those of his peers. But, after a talk with his father, he realizes that his eyes rise to the skies and speak to the stars. That they are similar to his father’s, his agong’s and his younger brother’s eyes. He becomes inspired by the men in his family and recognizes his own power and the strength that comes from within.
