New Books October 2022
I am the Subway by Kim Hyo-eun
Written in first-person, the subway explains to readers what its job is–and shares vignettes about the people who ride the subway. Granny gets on at City Hall and brings the strong, salty smell of the sea because she grew up diving in the ocean to bring fresh fish to her family. As people fill the train, it feels like a little family of strangers you might never meet again.
Brown is Beautiful: A Poem of Self-Love by Supriya Kelkar
On a hike with her grandparents, a young Indian-American girl makes note of all the things in nature that are brown, too. From a nurturing mother bear, to the steadiness of deep twisting roots, to the beauty of a wild mustang, brown is everywhere! On her way, the girl collects the beautiful brown things she encounters as mementos for a scrapbook to share with a very special new addition to her family–a baby brother!
For fans of Hair Love and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, Brown is Beautiful is an empowering picture book about recognizing the beauty around you and within you.
Keepunumuk: Weeachumun’s Thanksgiving Story by Danielle Greendeer
Learn the story of Weeachumun (corn) and the first Thanksgiving from the Wampanoag perspective, and how they helped the Pilgrims who didn’t understand or respect Weeachumun. But Weeachumun told the First Peoples to help the newcomers by bringing them corn and her sisters, crab apples, and chokecherries, and help them learn to fish.
Keepunumuk is an important picture book honoring both the history and tradition that surrounds the story of the first Thanksgiving. Many First Peoples consider this day to be a day of mourning, not thanksgiving.
Over and Under the Waves by Kate Messner
Follow a family kayaking in the ocean as they paddle and notice what’s in the sky and the ocean’s surface like the whales breaching. Below them, the ocean teams with life — both plants and animals. As always, the evocative writing shares memorable details and vivid verbs. “Under the waves, leopard sharks prowl,” and “Barnacles pull in their feather feet, while treefish and prawns tuck away in the rocks.”
Once again, Messner shares the wonders of the world’s biggest ecosystem with the unique over/under pattern.
Three Billy Goats Gruff by Mac Barnett
This is the first book in a new collection of fractured fairy tales by the hilarious Mac Barnett and the amazing Jon Klassen. Once there was a bridge and a terrible and VERY hungry troll lived underneath it. When the three Billy Goats Gruff decide to clip-clop across the bridge to get to the grassy ridge, the troll is already imagining all the way to prepare a delicious goat dinner. But the troll underestimates those seemingly sweet but oh-so-savvy goats!
This book is a twist on the beloved classic The Three Billy Goats Gruff and is sure to be a huge hit with grownups and kids alike.
How to Eat a Book by Mrs. & Mr. MacLeod
“Sheila sat down to eat her first book and the strangest thing happened . . . The book ate HER.”
One by one, Sheila, Gerald, and Geraldine are eaten . . . by their books. This peculiar turn of events flings them far and wide. Sheila escapes the weight of the world entirely, while Gerald braves the wonder of seeing it up close. And Geraldine, well, Geraldine turns as terrifically terrible as she possibly can.
This one reminds me a lot of Shel Silverstein and the illustrations are so neat!
