New Picture Books (June 2022)
Brave Every Day by Trudy Ludwig
Brave Every Day is a story about managing anxiety and finding the courage to stand up for yourself and others. Hiding is what Camila does best when she worries, and she worries a lot. A class trip to the aquarium makes her more worried than ever. But when an anxious classmate asks for help, Camila discovers that her heart is bigger than her fears. Social-emotional learning expert, Trudy Ludwig, (author of The Invisible Boy) brings another powerful book!
KINDergarten: Where Kindness Matters Every Day by Vera Ahiyya
KINDergarten is written by a real-life kindergarten teacher! It’s the first day of kindergarten and Leo isn’t ready at all. On the first day of school, she asks is anyone witnessed someone being kind that day. Several classmates noticed Leo helping a friend, holding the door and returning classroom supplies. Leo smiles as he realized that he does know a lot about kindness.
KINDergarten is a story about a classroom coming together and is sure to calm the nerves to new kindergarteners.
Queen of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes
The Queen of Kindergarten is a wonderful companion to the King of Kindergarten! MJ is ready to rock the first day of kindergarten. Her hair is freshly braided and her mom’s special tiara is on her head. The tiara isn’t just for show, though. It is a reminder of all the good things she brings to the classroom, stuff like her kindness, friendliness, and impressive soccer skills.
The Queen of Kindergarten is the perfect book to reinforce excitement and build confidence in the newest students!
The Juneteenth Story by Alliah Agostini
The Juneteenth Story provides an introductory history of Juneteenth for kids. It details the evolution of the holiday commemorating the date the enslaved people of Texas first learned of their freedom. The Juneteenth Story is a beautifully illustrated book. Not only is it suited for children to learn more about this important holiday, but also an excellent source for adults.
The Blur by Minh Lee
The Blur is an adorable picture books about how kids grow up way too fast. Both children and adults will get a kick out of the ordinary things kids do in life being compared to superpowers. The Blur would make a great book for graduates too!
Some Daddies by Carol Gordon Ekster
Some Daddies teach you about the world. Others attend tea parties. Some help turn blankets into forts. This book celebrates the incredible diversity of modern fathers. The inclusive cast of characters includes a two-dad family, a single dad and a stay-at-home dad. Some Daddies is an ode to fatherhood and will give readers new appreciation for their own father-figures. This would be a great addition to my Father’s Day booklist!
