Presidents’ Day by Anne Rockwell
The kids in this class are celebrating Presidents’ Day! Each child dresses up as one of the Founding Fathers and represents their accomplishments. This book is easy for students to connect with, since each president is introduced through the voice of a child. At the same time, it explains what Presidents’ Day is and why it is important.

I am George Washington by Brad Meltzer
I am George Washington is a children’s biography that is easy to understand. The story starts in Washington’s childhood. And, in a relatable way, it shares his road to becoming the first president of the United States of America. The colorful, detailed illustrations really help students connect to the book.

I am Abraham Lincoln by Brad Meltzer
Another great read aloud biography from Brad Meltzer. I am Abraham Lincoln is written in a way that makes history make sense for children. The book focuses on Lincoln’s character traits that made him a heroic role model. How he spoke about fairness and that led to abolishing slavery.
Presidents’ Day by Margaret McNamara
This is an easy reader for kids. Presidents’ Day shares very basic information about the holiday that even the youngest of students can understand. The simple text makes it informative and fun to read for lower elementary classes.
2021 President Read Alouds
Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice by Nikki Grimes
Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice is a powerful book about the newest Vice President of the United States. This young daughter of immigrants grew up to be the first woman, Black person and South Asian American Vice President.
It tells the story of how she accompanied her parents to civil rights marches. When asked what she wanted, Harris responded “freedom!” This belief in freedom and justice for all shaped who she is today. She has used her voice to speak up for what she believed in. The stunning verse and gorgeous illustrations of this book make it a must-read!
Joey: The Story of Joe Biden by Dr. Jill Biden
Written by his wife, Joey: The Story of Joe Biden, follows his path to the presidency. Starting with stories of his childhood, we learn that Biden was raised to be independent and strong. Students will really be able to connect with the antics of Joey as a young boy!
