Garden Read Aloud Books
The Curious Garden by Peter Brown
This is one of my favorite books! In The Curious Garden, a young boy lives in a gray, drab city. One day he discovers a struggling garden and decides to take care of it. Slowly, he is able to turn this dark city into a lush, green world.

The Gardener by Sarah Stewart
The Gardener is told in a series of letters written by young Lydia. Set in the era of the Depression, Lydia is sent to live with her uncle in the big city. Lydia is determined to get her uncle to smile and she uses flowers to do so. I love that this story shows that happiness can be found in the simplest of things.
How Groundhog’s Garden Grew by Lynne Cherry
In How Groundhog’s Garden Grew, Little Groundhog gets in trouble for stealing food from the other animals. Squirrel promises to show him how to plant his own garden. A wonderful story of friendship, teamwork and patience!

Bloom, Boom! by April Pulley Sayre
This beautiful book of poetry would be perfect to share in April. The simple words are full of rhyme. Each line of the poem is accompanied by a gorgeous photo as well. I could almost feel spring jumping off the page in this one!
Bloom, Boom! includes extensive back matter on each flower that is shared throughout the book.
Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner
Nana is teaching her young granddaughter how to plant a garden. She shares how everything works together to make a garden to come to life. That the animals, bugs, plants, weather and people all play a part.
Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt explores the plants above ground and the secret world beneath the dirt.
We are the Gardeners by Joanna Gaines
We are the Gardeners is a feel good book full of encouragement, positivity and beauty. It shares how to plan your garden. However, it also includes life lessons that you learn along the way.
This story of the Gaines’ family experience starting a garden proves that hard work and perseverance pays off!
