Making online read alouds interactive can be tricky! During a time of distance learning, you are not right there with your class. Your students are easily distracted by everything going on around them. Here are some ways to make your virtual read-alouds more engaging for your kids!

Making Online Read Alouds Interactive

Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

As you read, ask your class a yes or no question. Have them respond with a thumbs up or a thumbs down to show their thoughts.

Example: Do you think the wolf will blow the house down? Give me a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

Show the Emotion

Discuss how the main character is feeling in the story. Have students use facial expression to give their answer.

Examples:

  • How do you think the character is feeling? If they are sad, show me a frown. If you think they are happy, show me a smile!
  • This character seems grumpy. Show me a grumpy face.

Multiple Choice

Ask your students a question about the book and give them 2-3 response choices. Have them respond to the question by showing that many fingers.

Example: Do you think the kids are 1-going home, 2-going to school or 3-going to the park? Show me with your fingers.
