I feel like I’ve shared a lot of brand new books so far this month, so we might as well continue with that. Today I’m sharing with you new picture books that were released in September of 2024.

This is How We Play by Jessica Slice
This book features different families at play and each one of these families has a member of their family who has a disability. And it shows how these people in their families use adaptive play and imaginative and considerate play so that everyone can be involved in what they are doing and that way everyone can join in the fun as well.
Fail-a-Bration by Brad Montague
A fail-a-bration is celebrating the joy and learning even when you fail. So it says that you are cordially invited to a fail-a-bration party. You are to bring that lopsided cake, the plant that died, and the spelling test that you failed with you. The authors really want to start this movement to talk about how failing isn’t bad. That we need to celebrate that you tried that you learn something new. That you have the opportunity to grow and get better at it
We are the Builders! by Deepa Iyer
It’s about this close knit, diverse neighborhood, and how everybody pitches in to help one another. This neighborhood is celebrating community day, and all of the kids are kind of trying to figure out where they fit in. Are they going to be builders or caregivers or leaders? They discover along the way is that there’s a place for every person, no matter their skills or their interests. But that this collaboration is what makes the community strong.
The Idea in You by Questlove
The Idea in You is a fun exploration of imagination and finding inspiration. This book will inspire your students to find their own creative pursuits and find out what they are passionate about and what brings them joy.
Leo's First Vote by Christina Soontornvat
This is a good book about introducing voting and elections to students. We follow along as Leo goes with his father to vote and how important it is to use our voices in the community and how every vote counts. The book takes us through the whole election process and explains it in kid-friendly terms so that students understand what’s happening in the election and why voting is so important. It also includes additional back matter for students who want to learn more and really dig deeper on this process.
I Want to Read ALL the Books! by Debbie Ridpath Ohi
It’s about a curious young girl who has questions about everything. She learns that she can get so many answers from a book, but that it also leads to more questions. When her mom brings her to the library, she realizes there’s a lot of books out there! She’s on this mission to read as many books as she can and to learn as much as she can. A great book to show students how powerful reading can be; that it’s fun and that it can answer a lot of your questions!
Pockets of Love by Yamile Saied Mendez
Grandma Monona always made the best empanadas for Mami’s birthday. But Grandma Monona has passed away, and Mami is really sad that her birthday won’t be the same. So Star and Sebby know that they need to do something to cheer her up. Can they make the same empanadas that their grandmother made, or will they turn out differently because they don’t really know what that secret ingredient is?
The Boldest White by Ibtihaj Muhammad
This is about a young girl who loves being a part of her community at her mosque and she loves being a part of the group at her fencing lessons. But when she’s the center of attention, when all eyes are on her, she freezes up and she gets nervous. Her mama says that bravery will come with time, but with the fencing tournament up, coming up, will she be able to get up in front of other people? Will she be able to overcome that fear?

This is the third book in the Stacey’s Stories series. Stacey and her friends can’t wait until lunchtime on Friday because it’s Taco Pizza Friday. But then Stacey realizes that some of her classmates can’t afford to eat the school lunch on Friday that everybody is looking forward to. She rallies her friends and her community around her to speak out and to make a difference. A great book about the power that one person can have to make a difference and how we can all help out each other and make a difference in our world.
