Hey there teacher friends! Welcome to The Colorful Apple Podcast. I’m so happy you’re here today because I’m going to share something I’m really excited about that might just transform your read alouds this school year.

Let me ask you a question… Have you ever grabbed a book off your classroom shelf for a read aloud, started reading it to your students, and then halfway through realized it wasn’t actually teaching what you intended?

I know I have! I remember this one time when I needed to teach cause and effect. I was rushing between lessons and just grabbed what looked like a good book off my shelf. I was like, “Oh, I can just use this to teach my lesson because I don’t have time to plan ahead.” I got halfway through reading it to my eager students when that sinking feeling hit me – this book had absolutely no clear cause and effect relationships! It was a wonderful story, but completely wrong for what I was trying to teach.

Or how about this one – have you ever finished reading a book to your class and then realized you were so focused on just getting through it that you didn’t actually teach the lesson? I’ve definitely been there too, reading an entire book and then at the end thinking, “Wait, I didn’t ask a single meaningful question throughout that whole story!”

If you’re nodding along, I want you to know that I see you, I hear you, and these struggles are absolutely real. You’re not alone.

THE READ ALOUD REALITY

Today, I want to talk about something that’s absolutely transformative in the classroom but can feel overwhelming to implement consistently – read alouds.

We all know just how powerful read alouds are. When I use them in my classroom, I’ve seen my students make incredible connections, especially across different subject areas. There’s something magical about the way a story helps students understand content so much better than just hearing me talk about it at the front of the room.

Read alouds bring our lessons to life. They help students internalize what they’re learning in a way that direct instruction just can’t match. And when we make them interactive, our students aren’t just passively listening – they’re engaging, responding, and becoming part of the story.

But let’s be honest about the challenges, shall we? From talking with hundreds of teachers, I know there are three major hurdles we all face with read alouds:

First, there’s the time constraint. With every minute of your day scheduled and administrators walking around with clipboards making sure you’re “on task,” where do you possibly fit in meaningful read alouds?

Second, there’s book organization. How many times have you stood in front of your classroom library thinking, “I have a million books, but which one would be good for teaching inference?” or “Which book would help my students understand main idea?”

And third, there’s knowing what questions to ask. Even when you find the right book, coming up with those on-the-spot, higher-order thinking questions that really develop comprehension can feel impossible.

I know that feeling of wanting to do more read alouds but feeling like the obstacles are just too great.

INTRODUCING THE WORKSHOP

That’s why I’ve created something that I’m really excited to share with you today – my free “Organize Your Read Alouds” 5-day workshop!

This workshop is designed specifically for busy teachers like you who want to make read alouds a consistent, powerful part of their instruction without spending hours planning or reorganizing your entire library.

And let me be clear – this isn’t your typical professional development where you get great ideas but have no idea how to implement them when you get back to your classroom. We’ve all been there, right? Sitting through a workshop thinking, “This sounds amazing,” but then reality hits when you’re back in your classroom and you have no clue how to actually put it into practice.

This workshop is different. Each day takes just 15 minutes of your time but delivers concrete, actionable tools that you can implement immediately. Plus, we’ll have a supportive Facebook community where teachers can share ideas, troubleshoot challenges, and celebrate wins together.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Let me walk you through what we’ll be covering during our five days together…

On Day 1, we’ll tackle the biggest challenge teachers mention to me – finding time for read alouds in any schedule. We’ll discover those hidden pockets of time that exist in even the busiest school day. You’ll walk away with a personalized daily and weekly read aloud schedule that works for YOUR classroom situation.

I’ll give you a customizable schedule template in two formats that you can start using immediately. By the end of just our first day together, you’ll have a concrete plan for fitting read alouds into any day, no matter how packed your curriculum is.

On Day 2, we’ll map out your year-long comprehension strategy plan. Instead of randomly choosing skills to focus on, we’ll create a strategic roadmap for teaching comprehension strategies across the entire school year.

You’ll receive a complete year-long strategy sequence guide plus a customizable strategy calendar with both filled-in and blank templates. This structured approach ensures you’re covering all essential skills at just the right times, with a logical progression that builds student understanding.

Day 3 is where the magic really happens! We’ll organize your books by comprehension strategy. This day includes a hands-on activity where we’ll sort actual books from your classroom library. You’ll learn specific criteria for identifying which books work best for each strategy – like what makes a great book for inferencing versus making connections.

I’ll provide printable book labels and a category checklist system plus a ready-to-use book recommendation list for each strategy. Just imagine walking into your classroom and immediately knowing which books to grab for teaching any comprehension skill! No more frantic searching or second-guessing your choices.

On Day 4, we’ll focus on creating effective questions for any picture book. No more reading an entire book without asking meaningful questions! You’ll receive strategy-specific question formulation guides, printable question stem cards you can keep right with your books, and a comprehensive question bank for any comprehension strategy.

These tools ensure your students are actively engaging with texts and developing deeper comprehension skills during every read aloud. And the best part? You won’t have to create these questions from scratch every time.

Finally, on Day 5, we’ll put it all together into a complete implementation system. You’ll receive a first-month read aloud planning blueprint and a ready-to-use first-month guide to get you started immediately. By the end of our fifth day, you’ll have a full read aloud system for the entire year that you can implement right away when school starts.

WHY THIS WORKSHOP IS DIFFERENT

What makes this workshop different from other professional development you’ve experienced? Well, for starters, it’s all about practical implementation versus just theory. I know that’s the frustration with most PD – they give you big ideas but no concrete way to put them into action.

Every single day of our workshop includes downloadable templates and resources that you can customize for your specific classroom needs. These aren’t just pretty worksheets – they’re practical tools designed to make your teaching life easier.

I’ve structured each day to give you small, achievable wins that build your confidence and momentum. And you’ll be part of a community of teachers sharing ideas and supporting each other through the process.

This workshop isn’t about adding one more thing to your already full plate—it’s about making what you’re already doing more effective and manageable. It’s about taking the read alouds you know are important and making them work within your real classroom constraints.

HEAR FROM TEACHERS WHO’VE BEEN THERE

Don’t just take my word for it. Listen to what teachers just like you have said about these strategies.

Dorothy B., a second grade teacher, shared: “I came across your workshop and love your work. I have been teaching second grade for a long time and utilized the strategies you speak of to read aloud and engage my students. I am impressed with how you organize your work creating beautiful plans.”

And Mary R., a first grade teacher, said: “I love your workshop videos. You are always so bright and cheery and encouraging. I love how you walk us through the read aloud steps in your videos. It helps make read alouds way more manageable!”

Teachers just like you have transformed their read aloud practice with these strategies, and I know you can too.

LOGISTICS AND INVITATION

Here are the details: The workshop runs August 4th through August 8th. Videos will go live daily at 10 AM in our private Facebook group, but don’t worry if you can’t make it at that exact time – all sessions will be recorded so you can watch them whenever works for your schedule.

The best part? It’s completely FREE. I’m offering this workshop at no cost because I truly believe every student deserves to experience the magic of well-planned, purposeful read alouds.

Each day will take just 15 minutes of your time, but the impact on your teaching practice will be enormous. I’ve poured everything I know about effective read alouds into this workshop because I want to help as many teachers as possible create those magical reading moments in their classrooms.
