New Books November 2022
The Sour Grape by Jory John
The Sour Grape holds grudges for every reason under the sun. Lime never returned a scarf they borrowed? Grudge! Orange never called back? Grudge! But when a friend holds a grudge against the Sour Grape without listening to an explanation, the Sour Grape realizes how unfair grudges can be. Could a bunch of forgiveness and compassion be enough to turn a sour grape sweet?
Snow Horses: A First Night Story by Patricia MacLachlan
Snow Horses is a cozy picture book of love, light, and community during the New Year. It takes the past with us as we step into the future, brought to life with cut paper illustrations.
On the very last evening before the new year, when the snow is falling soft and thick, two black horses wait for the jingle of their sled. As they ride about town, they will spread light to their beloved neighbors, bidding farewell to the last night—and saying hello to the first morning.
I Don’t Care by Julie Fogliano
I Don’t Care is about how friends can be besties and still be completely different. It’s a great book to share in the classroom when talking about appreciating differences (or letting superficial differences be of little concern, because there are other things that REALLY matter).
I Don’t Care is a simply-illustrated book about two friends. Lyrical, rhyming text pairs well with the drawings highlighted with teal and yellow that bounce across the page.
It’s Not the Three Little Pigs by Josh Funk
Meet the three (ahem—four!) little pigs as they convince the narrator to tell a slightly different version of their fairy tale: First, there’s Alan, the one pig in the bunch who is actually a builder. He’s got a BIG problem with building a home out of flimsy straw. Next, there’s Alfred, who wants to be an actor and wouldn’t dream of getting his hands dirty. Then we have Alvin, whose dream is to be…a pumpkin.
Last but not least is Alison, the fourth pig, who is ready to bring some flair to this story—if only she can get the narrator to agree to a few changes…And what about that wolf? Grab your jetpacks and get ready for this rollicking retelling of the popular tale.
My Paati’s Saris by Jyoti Rajan Gopal
In My Paati’s Sarais, a Tamil boy explores his love for his grandmother and her colorful sari collection in this tale of expressing your true self. Another exciting day with Paati begins with a host of fun activities done in preparation for tonight’s party; threading flowers into garlands for decoration, going to the market, and helping her in the kitchen with the scent of sambar in the air.
Through it all the boy finds comfort in Paati’s sari, whether he’s wrapped in its colors for dress-up or clutching its folds for comfort. Each sari holds a story—ones that speak to him, but most important of all they allow him just to be.
